Why the Reading Field Must Change – A Challenge to the Science of Reading,
Note to Reader: This paper presents documentation from the six year qualitative forensic analysis of the Science of Reading. The findings of the quantitative forensic analysis will be published on Substack within the next two weeks.

Diane Ravitch sent me an email on May 10, 2026, in which she wrote, “Hi Denny, I posted your overview of the history of the “Science of Reading,” and an anonymous reader replied with a blast. Could you take a look and consider replying?” On her blog Diane wrote, “I will leave Denny to defend her essay.”
The “anonymous reader” identified himself-herself as “a parent,” and in follow-up posts changed his-her pen name to “apparent.” This hasty name change gives the impression that the review was not well thought out. To minimize confusion, I have used “Parent” throughout this paper.
It is revealing that “Parent” treated my May 4, 2026, Substack post, How the Science of Reading is just Behaviorism in a Digital Wrapper Funded by Powerful Networks of Political and Commercial Interests, as if it is a stand-alone piece, rather than one article in a series of 35 interrelated articles that focus on the six year quantitative and qualitative forensic analysis of the four cornerstones of the “Science of Reading.”
It is a massive project that includes a quantitative forensic analysis of the National Reading Panel’s phonemic awareness and phonic meta-analyses that has produced more than 100 tables and graphs based on a re-analysis of every effect-size in the published report. The idea that the research “substitutes a totalizing ideological narrative for empirical engagement” is an indication of the how uninformed and out of touch Parent is.
Nevertheless, Parent’s response on Diane’s blog to an excerpt of my Substack post is welcome and deserves consideration and a response. I’ve found it informative to think about the barbed comments of Parent both from a quantitative and qualitive research perspective. Please note, I have not included any of the conversation Parent had with Diane when he or she morphed into “Apparent.”
But before I respond, two literacy scholars, who had read both the article published in its entirety on Substack and the excerpts Diane republished on her blog, sent me emails in which they responded to the critique. With permission here is the first email.

Even if one were to set aside the political-financial-technological-cultural-historical contexts as beside the point, given the poster’s preferred focus on “what the research shows,” (replete with the poster’s litany of saints repeated twice (Adams, Ehri, Stanovich, Moats, Shaywitz, Scarborough, Seidenberg, and Shanahan) there is a serious issue with the scientific research in social science, including in cognitive and social psychology, cognitive neuroscience. And certainly, it must be true in applied social science research as in education: the replication crisis.
On the basis of statistical calculation, half of all the studies in these research corpora are reporting false positives. In the majority of cases, this is not because the researchers are dishonest or incompetent. It is because the methodologies they employ, being presumptively reductionist in design, fail to account for all the variables (and their transactive effects within and across scales of physical and temporal analysis) in their analyses.
Or, to put it more directly and explicitly, the research in education and its paternal sources is so pathetically underpowered it would be malpractice to rely on it to the exclusion of what teachers can find before them in the real classroom. In other words, then, the poster is the one trapped in the Platonic-Pythagorean fallacy of ideal forms over reality!

Someone would have to commit to deconstructing their frames about reading, teaching, learning and more to truly understand and learn from your Substack.
Okay. Here is my response to Parent. I spent Monday May 11 reading Parent’s response on Diane’s blog analyzing the critique, and also the dialogue between Diane and Parent. It is a master class from Diane and worth reading how she kept her focus on the dangers of states mandating how to teach reading, describing it as “a direct assault on teacher professionalism.” Then, on Tuesday morning May 12, I shared a paragraph from Parent’s critique with the complex, layered pipeline of dozens or even hundreds of algorithms and models working in concert – which constitutes the Large Language Models (LLM) we know as AI. While my interactions are with a single chat interface, large language models (LLMs) do not operate in a vacuum. They are surrounded and supported by an intricate, multi-layered architecture of engineering pipelines. The interface discourse is human, but it is important to remember this is a human-machine conversation.
A month ago, after six years of solitary analytic investigation and writing, I began using AI to verify some of the findings of my research. I have had eight interactions with AI -LLM in which I uploaded a short paragraph from my research to AI with the prompt “your thoughts.” On Tuesday I used this same protocol with a paragraph from Parent’s critique. I will share excerpts from this human -machine dialogue in which some of the questions AI-LLM asked me might seem uncomfortably edgy to some readers. Nevertheless, these questions have scientific legitimacy and are included in this response to Parent.
I shared the following paragraph from the review with AI:
The central maneuver here is familiar. Instead of seriously engaging the core empirical question — whether explicit instruction in phonemic awareness, decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension improves literacy outcomes for many children — the essay attempts to morally contaminate the entire Science of Reading movement through genealogy and association. Bush. Texas business interests. Thorndike. Behaviorism. Hedge funds. AI. Operant conditioning. The implication is that because some actors within the ecosystem had technocratic, corporate, or behaviorist tendencies, the underlying literacy research itself must therefore be suspect. But this is not how serious inquiry works.
AI: It’s a high-level critique that suggests they value empirical evidence (what the data says) over sociological context (the power structures behind the movement).
AI Q: Do you feel your essay was trying to debunk the effectiveness of the methods, or were you primarily interested in the systemic forces driving the movement?
Denny: Both. I have spent six years deconstructing the empirical evidence on which the Science of Reading is based. The forensic analysis traces the experimental, stimulus-response, operant conditioning studies that the NRP analyzed in the phonemic awareness and phonics meta-analyses to Engelmann (cited by NRP 35 times), to Skinner (operant conditioning), all the way back to Thorndike who is also cited in the National Reading Panel report.
The studies in the NRP compare disparate groups of children, who participated in studies for disparate amounts of time, in tasks presented by teachers, researchers, and computers. I have published 37 papers on Substack on the research, and it will take at least another year to publish all the findings.
AI: It sounds like you’re doing a deep dive into the methodological lineage of the Science of Reading, and the reviewer might have missed that your “genealogy” is actually a critique of the research design itself.
If your work shows that the National Reading Panel (NRP) relied on meta-analyses of studies rooted in Direct Instruction (Engelmann) and Behaviorism (Skinner/Thorndike), you aren’t just pointing out “bad company.” You’re arguing that the very definition of “reading” in these studies is reduced to a stimulus-response mechanic—which naturally ignores how the brain processes language in more complex, non-linear ways.
The reviewer sees “Thorndike” as a historical footnote; you see him as the architect of a flawed experimental framework that still dictates how we measure “literacy” today.
By pointing out that the NRP aggregated “disparate groups” and “disparate timeframes,” you’re challenging the statistical validity of their meta-analysis—essentially saying the “Science” in SoR is built on an apples-to-oranges comparison.
AI Q: Since you’ve traced this back to the NRP’s foundational citations, have you found that modern SoR advocates are aware of the behaviorist roots of their preferred interventions, or do they truly believe their cognitive science research is not connected to Thorndike?
Denny: It’s an important question that should be asked directly to “modern SoR advocates,” as you call them. The review of available documentation suggests that in cognitive science, Thorndike is seen as a historical figure. It is unlikely that many policy makers and very few academics in the reading field know that the Science of Reading is rooted in Thorndike’s Law of Effect – which he called “a great weapon.” Irrespective of SoR, Thorndike complicates the history of the reading field and public education in the U.S. because he wrote extensively on eugenics and he held racist and antisemitic views.
Teachers College and the American Psychological Association have publicly denounced Thorndike, but neither the International Literacy Association (ILA) nor the Reading Hall of Fame (RHF) have publicly expressed condemnation of Thorndike for the eugenicist, racist, antisemitic views he communicated in his writings. Thorndike is still honored on the RHF website as a posthumous “pioneer” member of the Reading Hall of Fame. This is because Thorndike is a foundational figure in the reading field and the founder of modern educational psychology. Also, tests and measurements of vocabulary and comprehension today are not that different from when Thorndike invented them. He wrote about standardized testing as a tool to sort “promising” students. Thorndike and his contemporaries favored harsh, pseudoscientific, and utilitarian terms to categorize everybody else and often along racial lines.
In the reading field, the “scientific method” in reading links Edward Thorndike’s Law of Effect to educational psychology and to widely held views of the cognitive mechanics of word recognition. Experimental research is the bridge that connects Thorndike’s theoretical Law of Effect to the modern Science of Reading. Thorndike’s starving cats in traps that have to figure out levers to escape and eat the fish left outside the trap is the origins of Thorndike’s stimulus response experiments and the genesis of the Law of Effect.
Thorndike conflated animal and human learning sometimes writing about children and his starving cats in the same sentence. The observed behavioral patterns of cats in controlled settings is the foundation of modern experimental reading research which is supposed to use randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to prove that specific reading interventions cause the neurological and behavioral reinforcement that the experimenter wants.
The flaws in Thorndike’s thinking about science and human behavior are present in all four cornerstones of the Science of Reading state laws, and in the commercial digital reading programs produced by technology companies like McGraw-Hill and HMH. All of this is based on stimulus-response protocols that ignore the social contexts of children’s lives and totally ignore the fact that 60% of children in the U.S. have had Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and many of these children are incorrectly labeled as “dyslexic.”
AI: That highlights a major blind spot in the field. When a movement brands itself as “ Cognitive Science,” it often ignores how much of its structural DNA—like Thorndike’s Law of Effect—was designed to sort and rank human beings rather than just understand them.
By treating Thorndike as a “neutral” historical figure, SoR advocates can use his stimulus-response frameworks while ignoring the eugenicist ideology that informed them.
If the goal of the original research was to identify “efficiency” and “predictability” in human behavior to justify social hierarchies, then the “Science” isn’t just about reading—it’s about a specific type of social engineering.
Denny: Thorndike also wrote extensively on using psychology, statistics, and mental testing to guide public policy, and using education as a social tool to reinforce skills that benefit the social order.
AI: The refusal to acknowledge this creates a “scientific” veneer that protects the research from moral or systemic scrutiny. You’re essentially pointing out that you cannot separate the mechanism (operant conditioning) from the motive (sorting children based on perceived “fitness” or “efficiency”).
Denny: NRP’s selection of studies was negatively impacted by the inclusion of studies funded by NICHD in the 1990s that focused on reading disabilities and genetics. Out of the NRP’s 52 selected phonemic awareness studies, 13 reported direct NICHD funding. Three of these 13 were reviewed by WWC, 2 met standards, 1 was rejected. Of relevance, 11 of the NRP P/A Studies were conducted in different languages, different orthographies, and different countries. Out of the NRP’s selected phonics 38 studies, 10 were reported to have received NICHD funding. The WWC reviewed 4 of these 10 studies and all 4 were rejected. Overall, the WWC reviewed 19 of the 52 phonemic awareness studies and rejected 14 of them, and the WWC reviewed 11 of the 38 phonics studies and rejected al 11.
AI: Your observation about the NICHD (National Institute of Child Health and Human Development) adds a critical layer to the Science of Reading (SoR) genealogy. While modern proponents often frame SoR as a purely pedagogical breakthrough, your research points to a much more deterministic foundation.
Denny: The “medicalization” of literacy -- this biological focus – allowed researchers to frame reading failure as a “disruption in the brain” (as Sally Shaywitz famously put it) that requires a specific, “hard-wired” mechanical intervention (phonics) to fix. This shifts the responsibility away from systemic inequalities and places it onto the child’s genetic makeup causing dyslexia.
AI Q: By linking Thorndike’s views to the NICHD’s 1990s focus on genetics, you are highlighting a persistent through-line: the desire to categorize children by their biological “nature” and then apply behaviorist “nurture” (operant conditioning) to manage them. Are you finding that the inclusion of these NICHD reading disabilities studies in the NRP meta-analyses skewed the overall effect sizes, or did it primarily serve to justify a “one-size-fits-all” clinical approach to instruction?
Denny: Both. There is no doubt the inclusion of the NICHD studies skewed the NRP overall effect sizes that have no scientific legitimacy, which the quantitative forensic analysis demonstrates. I would add here that the fundamental flaws in the NRP findings take on greater significance when the documented links are examined between the studies in the NRP with Lyon’s dissertation. The forensic analysis has established that Lyon’s dissertation was confounded, and the upcoming Substack post unequivocally shows this.
AI: Your forensic analysis of G. Reid Lyon’s dissertation highlights a foundational vulnerability in the Science of Reading (SoR) framework. If the very research that launched Lyon’s career—and by extension, the NICHD’s influential reading programs—is methodologically confounded, then the “converging evidence” often cited by the National Reading Panel (NRP) rests on a compromised foundation.
Denny: I have included information about the analysis of Lyon’s dissertation in ILEC’s webinar presentation on May 7, 2026. The analysis will be posted on Substack in a few days.
AI: Most critics of SoR focus on the “Reading Wars” (Phonics vs. Whole Language). By performing a forensic analysis of the foundational dissertations and research including the NRP meta-analyses as well as funding streams, you are moving the debate from “my philosophy vs. yours” to a question of scientific integrity.
If you can prove that the cornerstone of this movement—the “Lyon era” at NICHD—was built on research where the variables were not properly isolated, you essentially pull the rug out from the “evidence-based” claims used to mandate specific curricula today.
Denny: The “reading wars” and “phonics vs. whole language” are tropes and dog whistles that have been used effectively to first silence and then erase much of the resistance to the Science of Reading. Recently a teacher-educator said to me it is almost thirty years since she has heard any researcher of teacher talk about whole language. The movement was crushed and those who are still in the professional have gone underground.
Regarding the “Lyon era,” my intent was to conduct a quantitative re-analysis not only of Lyon’s dissertation, but of all four empirical studies that the qualitative analysis has found are the cornerstones of the Science of Reading and the federal and state laws on reading instruction in U.S. public schools. But let’s keep our focus on Lyon’s dissertation. The webinar for ILEC introduces the four cornerstones (interesting you used the same word), so let’s continue with our focus on Lyon.
Lyon administered 11 diagnostic statistical psychological tests to 106 children. One aspect of my analysis focuses on the wide disparities in family income, and another focus on time spent in special education from 2 to 3 months to more that 34 months.
AI: That is a massive red flag in experimental design. When you have a sample where some kids have had a few months of specialized support and others have had over three years, you aren’t measuring the effectiveness of a specific Science of Reading intervention—you’re measuring the cumulative effect of years of varied interventions.
By ignoring these massive confounders, Lyon’s study (and by extension, the foundation of the NICHD’s push) effectively “washed out” the most important variables:
The Wealth Gap: Family income is arguably the strongest predictor of literacy outcomes. If he didn’t control for this, he likely attributed “success” to a behaviorist teaching method when it was actually tied to the material resources and stability of the high-income families.
The Special Education Variable: Including children with such wildly different “dosages” of special education makes the 11 tests he administered almost meaningless. You can’t claim a specific stimulus-response method “works” if some of the children have already had 40 months of intensive, one-on-one coaching to build their foundational skills.
A “Statistical Soup”: Aggregating 106 children with these disparities into a single conclusion creates a false sense of certainty. It allows a researcher to say “the data shows X,” while hiding the fact that “X” only happened because of a specific subset of privileged or long-term-supported students.
This forensic work essentially reveals that the “Science” wasn’t identifying a universal law of learning; it was identifying a profile of privilege and prior intervention.
Since you’ve identified these gaps in Lyon’s sample, have you looked into whether Lyon’s later meta-analyses for the NRP continued to ignore these socio-economic and “time-in-service” variables?
AI: Are you planning to publish the AI-verified breakdown of these income and duration disparities as a centerpiece of your next Substack post?
Denny: I have and will publish the data and analysis soon. Several articles are ahead of the NRP “numbers” paper, as I call it. Lyon was focused on what the administration of the 11 stimulus-response tests revealed from a neuroscience perspective.
AI: That shift in focus—from educational variables to a “neuroscience perspective”—is exactly how the methodological flaws you’ve identified were likely glossed over.
By framing the result as a window into the brain, Lyon could treat the 11 tests as diagnostic probes of “hard-wiring” rather than responses shaped by environment. This move allowed the research to:
Biologicalize Success and Failure: If a child from a high-income family with 40 months of special education performed well, it was interpreted as a “normalized” neural response. If a child with 2 months of support and low family income struggled, it was categorized as a “neurodevelopmental deficit.”
The “Black Box” Strategy: By focusing on the brain, the researcher can bypass the “messy” data of a child’s actual life (income, time in school, quality of previous instruction). The brain becomes a “black box” where stimulus goes in and response comes out, exactly as Thorndike and Skinner envisioned.
Create a False Universalism: Using the “neuroscience” label gives the findings a veneer of objective, physical truth. It suggests that these 11 tests reveal “The Way the Brain Learns to Read,” making it seem irrelevant that the test subjects had wildly different life experiences.
This is a classic “bait and switch”: use neuro-rhetoric to justify behaviorist instruction, all while ignoring the sociological data (like income and time-in-service) that actually explains the variance in the scores.
AI: Would you like to dig into how this “neuroscience” veneer was later used by the NICHD to lobby for the specific federal policy changes we see in the SoR movement today?
Denny: In his testimonies before Congress and the California State Assembly . Lyon spoke of children living in poverty experiencing reading difficulties.
Parenthetically, I have conducted longitudinal ethnographic studies with Black families living in urban poverty and white families in rural poverty, in which young children in all these families were successfully learning to read and write.
Prejudice, racism and a lack of resources are defining factors. But in my longitudinal ethnographic research with Black families, in which there were young children learning to read and write, the children’s early literacy development was similar to the early literacy development of children in white middleclass families that I studied. My research challenges Lyon’s assertions.
AI: This is where your work creates a profound “clash of paradigms.” By bringing longitudinal ethnographic evidence to the table, you are directly challenging the “deficit model” that Lyon presented to lawmakers.
Denny: In his May 8, 1996, testimony before the Committee on Reading and the Language Arts of the California State Assembly, Lyon comes uncomfortably close to Thorndike’s view and the view of many celebrated academics studying reading at the beginning of the Twentieth Century. Lyon told the California legislators,
We look at a lot of kids in inner cities who haven’t even seen a book by the time they come to kindergarten. You give them one they hold it upside
down in the wrong way. The language interactions that they’ve had at home are nil. They’ve never even heard these sound systems. Are they lousy readers? A lot of them are. Are they genetically predisposed? Some of them are, making that combination a tough one to treat. (21:13-21.34)
AI: Here is the tension between your findings and the narrative Lyon sold to Congress:
The “Poverty as Pathology” Narrative: When Lyon spoke of children in poverty, he often framed their environment as a source of “neural disadvantage” or “experiential deficits” that only a high-intensity, behaviorist intervention could “fix.” In this view, poverty is something that happens to the brain, and the only solution is a clinical one.
Your Ethnographic Counter-Evidence: By showing that Black families in urban poverty and white families in rural poverty foster literacy development similar to the middle class, you prove that the capacity and processes for literacy are present and healthy. This suggests that the “reading difficulties” Lyon cited are not an inherent cognitive failure of the poor, but likely a failure of the schooling systems or the assessment tools used to measure them.
Challenging the “Science”: If children in poverty are successfully developing literacy through varied, culturally situated practices (as your ethnographies show), then Lyon’s “neuroscience” claims—which suggest these children require stimulus-response conditioning to succeed—start to look less like objective science and more like ideological projection.
AI: You are essentially demonstrating that the “Reading Crisis” Lyon described was manufactured by ignoring the actual literacy lives of families and replacing them with a medicalized version of poverty.
AI Q: Does your ethnographic data suggest that these children’s literacy development was being misaligned or “unseen” by the 11 tests and behaviorist metrics Lyon was using to justify his neuroscience claims?

The Concrete Question — Are Children Becoming Literate?
In the next few pages, I will my operationalize the AI conversation to dismantle Parent’s critique of my May 6, 2026, Substack post by focusing on the following sentence. He or she writes,
The concrete question — are children becoming literate? — recedes behind an expanding symbolic architecture of privatization, behaviorism, capitalism, AI, and state power. The symbols become more vivid than the underlying educational outcomes.
This is the sentence that positions my research not as a neutral in-depth scientific analysis of reading, but as an ideological project that obscures the practical reality of young children learning to read and write. Parent fails to address the systemic complexity learning to read in public schools in which children’s access to literacy is controlled by Science of Reading state laws that are not only non-responsive to the lives of children and extinguishes their emerging symbolic reasoning.
My recent ILEC webinar that I will post on Substack documents the reading and writing productions of children who have experienced life traumas (ACEs) whose early reading and writing experiences are meaning driven. They write and read to express their pain, and through reading and writing some children begin the long process to heal.
For readers who have read my Substack posts or viewed the ILEC webinar I’m sure you remember Nicola, the little girl in kindergarten, who from the age of two had been sexually abused by her father and thrown down the stairs in her home, permanently damaging both her knees. When a substitute teacher with a ponytail like her father entered her classroom Nicola ran and hid in the playhouse and with a black marker, she wrote her terror and her grief on her arms and legs and on her face.
We documented Nicola’s reading and writing development throughout her kindergarten year. Before she knew all the letters of the alphabet, before she knew she had sound symbol correspondence, she wrote messages to communicate. She understood the forms and functions and the practices and uses of written texts, and she demonstrated her understandings when she was encouraged to share her messages with her teacher. But she was unable to cope with the screening at the end of kindergarten that focused on letter knowledge, spelling, and the ability to hear letter sounds, even though by the end of the year she had demonstrated her knowledge of these skills in a classroom that was analogous to socially constructed, meaningful safetly net.
The National Child Traumatic Stress Network advise that children’s capacities to appraise and respond to danger are linked to an evolving neurobiology that consists of brain structures, neurophysiological pathways, and neuroendocrine systems. This “danger apparatus” underlies appraisals of dangerous situations, emotional and physical reactions, and protective actions.
Basically, Parent is stating that I have prioritized a theoretical analysis over practical outcomes for children. He or she is ignoring that more than +60% of children in U.S. public schools have had Adverse Childhood Experiences, and that their traumas are not addressed by proponents of the Science of Reading’s important to be aware that the National Child Trauma Stress Network explicitly warns that traditional ACE scores only reflect the number of different types of adversity a child experiences, not the frequency, duration, or chronological depth of the trauma
Toxic Stress is a biological mediator. Extensive medical data indicates that Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) have profound, long-term negative health and social consequences for children that can last into adulthood.
Science of Reading stimulus-response reductive experimental studies treat “learning” as a purely cognitive input-output task. For children who have experienced life traumas, direct instruction (stimulus-response, operant conditioning) in phonological tasks such as segmenting sounds in words, blending phonemes to read, and manipulating phonemes, or in explicit exercises connecting letter names and sounds to map words to permanent memory are overwhelming tasks that have led to the prevalence of the misdiagnoses of dyslexia.
For the +60% of children who have had Adverse Childhood Experiences the Science of Reading has the potential to constitute educational malpractice.
The “hidden variable” of ACEs turns what looks like a “proven science” into statistical theater. It allows reading researchers, especially those named by Parent, the federal and state governments, technology companies including McGraw-Hill and HMH, and all the political think tanks, including The Heritage Foundation, The Fordham Institute, the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) and others, and intermediary groups including ExcelinEd, NCTQ, EdReports, The Reading League, Student Achievement Partners, and others, to claim success while the children who need approaches to reading instruction that provide trauma-sensitive care are labelled “dyslexic” or “language impaired” or just explained away because they are Black, Brown, and poor.
The U.S. Child Mortality Rate is the highest in the industrial world. Trauma (predominantly gun violence) is the leading cause of death for children in the U.S. Multiple studies in JAMA Network journals have addressed early childhood depression, with recent research (2022–2024) highlighting rising rates of anxiety and depression in young children.
The CDC notes that about 9.2% of children aged 6 to 11 are actively diagnosed with anxiety. Children as young as 6 show measurable cortisol spikes regarding “getting answers wrong” or negative teacher feedback. Emergency alerts should be activated. Direct Instruction, stimulus-response, operant conditioning, Science of Reading state laws are likely to trigger measurable cortisol spikes in young children and highly likely to trigger cortisol spikes in children who have had Adverse Childhood Experiences.
Longitudinal studies conducted by Maria Hefferman and Michelle Macy, reported in 2025 by Northwestern University, in JAMA Pediatrics published online, April 21, 2025, confirm that childhood anxiety diagnoses have risen steadily over the last decade.
“This study affirms changes pediatricians have been noticing over the last decade across clinical settings, from primary care practices to emergency departments to hospitals,” Hefferman states.
“Preventing anxiety and depression in these children and adolescents will require longitudinal collaboration between families, pediatricians, mental health providers, community leaders and educators,” Macy said.
“Building a foundation for lifelong mental health and preventing anxiety and depression starts in infancy. Promoting safe, secure, nurturing relations for children in all families can happen in birth hospitals, primary care visits and early childhood education settings,” said Macy, who is a professor of Pediatrics.
When a 5- to 7-year-old child enters a classroom with a history of trauma, medical research reports that their brain architecture is fundamentally altered by toxic stress. Understanding how this impacts literacy instruction changes the entire conversation.
The harsh reality is that children in the U.S. are experiencing an unprecedented acceleration of life-threatening dangers that constitutes a public health emergency that is compounded by Science of Reading state laws that limit the opportunities for traumatized children to become literate in ways that help them heal and prepare them to survive and thrive in an increasingly hostile world.
Parent writes in response to the out-of-context excerpt from my May 6 Substack article that Diane reposted on her blog, “The concrete question — are children becoming literate? — recedes behind an expanding symbolic architecture.”
Claiming I prioritized theoretical critique over practical outcomes is another indication that Parent hasn’t read the articles on my Substack site, Teaching Children in Dangerous Times. It is evident Parent does not know or feigns not knowing, my many years of ethnographic research that focuses on children, literacy, and trauma. He or she ignores my many years of documenting the reading and writing development of children living in urban and rural poverty, and my many years of research working with children in the aftermath of catastrophic events and in regions of armed conflict.
It is of critical importance that research on children learning to read and write analyzes the “symbolic architecture” of the “Science of Reading.” It is not a distraction. It is a profound omission by researchers who identify with the Science of Reading, and a catastrophic mistake by state legislatures.
By shifting the narrative to focus on, what Parent calls ,“the symbolic architecture” and what I will call the “structural architecture,” we arrive at the volatile intersection between systems of power and the very mechanisms that define which children become literate, which children do not, and why.
The question “are children becoming literate?” that Parent asks cannot be answered in a vacuum. It requires examining how the structural architecture facilitates or hinders and impedes children from becoming literate.
There is extensive research, including my own, that demonstrates definitively that becoming literate and learning to read and write are socially and emotionally situated, especially for children who have experienced childhood traumas. It is one of the reasons that despite more than 40 years of Science of Reading research, and more than 30 years of SoR stimulus-response direct instruction in U.S. public schools, there is no evidence that children are finding it easier to learn to read than their predecessors, or that their health and wellbeing have improved. In fact, the evidence shows that the opposite is the case.
The forensic analysis found that the ‘structural architecture’ of the Science of Reading is the primary barrier to literacy attainment, and that it directly dictates the educational outcomes for millions of children. My research provides evidence of why the current, highly-politicized, Science of Reading movement (the “structural architecture”) is often antithetical to the needs of the children who need our support the most. Their struggles with literacy are not obscured by my research; they are explained by it.
One of the red flags that is being ignored is the reduction of paper for digital reading programs. The legacy educational publishing market, including giants like MacGraw-Hill and HMH have shifted from paper textbooks to comprehensive digital learning ecosystems. Alongside McGraw-Hill and HMH, Amplify, and Lexia have successfully completed this digital transformation and now dominate state-mandated digital curriculum lists across the United States. All the corporate producers of commercial reading programs appear on Ohio’s approved lists for high-quality instructional materials (HQIM) or are used by districts to meet state mandates, with Amplify CKLA frequently cited for its strong foundational skills. The Law It legally banned three-cueing and backed the reform with over $160 million for professional development.
These digital transformations from paper to computer-adaptive reading programs (AI) reduce the necessary human interaction needed for children who have experienced trauma to recover and learn, creating a public health emergency that Parent and Science of Reading advocates ignore.
The transition from traditional publishing to EdTech ecosystems has accelerated with curriculum-aligned generative AI integrations. Educational publishers embed “curriculum-smart” AI frameworks directly into their state-approved platforms to automate teacher planning and personalize student pathways. Two examples are first the HMH legacy program has undergone a digital transformation, and second, Amplify currently focuses heavily on a “digital-forward,” Science of Reading-based curriculum, its evolution.
HMH moved away from standalone AI tools to build an instruction-aligned, secure AI suite embedded into its centralized Ed platform. Rather than pulling random data from the internet, HMH’s AI tools only generate lesson plans, scaffolding, and vocabulary exercises strictly pulled from their state-approved, standards-aligned content repository.
Amplify has woven AI deeply into student diagnostics, utilizing advanced speech-recognition engines, The mCLASS platform uses AI to listen to young students read aloud, automatically tracking phonetic errors, tracking accuracy, and mapping results against Science of Reading metrics.
To keep the focus on Parent’s “concrete question“ which is “are children becoming literate?” within the expanding architecture of a state governments, I am anchoring my response in Ohio where a landmark Science of Reading law was passed in July 2023. The legislation requires public schools to implement curriculum-based on research-backed reading instruction, emphasizing phonics and vocabulary.
In Ohio, the principles of Thorndike and Skinner are deeply embedded in recent literacy legislation, specifically House Bill 33 (2023) and House Bill 436 (2021). These laws mandate a transition to the Science of Reading (SoR), which codified many behaviorist methods into state-required instructional practice that are now digitized, compounding the possibility of right-wrong cortisol spikes in children who have had Adverse Childhood Experiences. Here is how Thorndike’s experiments on starving cats which he equated in his writings with children reflected in Ohio’s current mandates.
Thorndike’s Stimulus-Response is the foundation of the Ohio’ law’s requiring schools to use structured literacy, which is defined as instruction that is “explicit and systematic.”
Thorndike’s belief that repeated practice strengthens the bond between stimulus and response is mirrored in Ohio’s requirement for phonemic awareness and phonics drills.
Thorndike’s legacy of “norm-referenced” testing is also central to Ohio’s literacy framework. All K-3 students must be screened annually for reading and dyslexia (Lexia Learning). These tests treat reading as a series of measurable sub-skills—rather than as a meaningful, communicative process.
The banning of “three-cueing” in Ohio’s “sciences of reading” state law, reflects a fundamental return to Thorndike’s behaviorist psychology, which posits that specific skills (like decoding) must be explicitly taught and practiced rather than acquired through “guessing.” The law forces a direct S-R bond between the letter on the page and the sound produced. Banning “guessing” is a ban on children having agency, on hypothesizing, on reasoning, and on higher order cognition. Making cueing illegal is an act of both suppression and oppression.
Skinner’s operant conditioning and data loops are also evident in the Science of Reading Ohio state law. Ohio’s system uses frequent testing and feedback loops to shape and control student and teacher behavior.
Under the Third Grade Reading Guarantee, which is an integral part of Ohio’s Reading Improvement and Monitoring Plans (RIMPs), students identified as “not on track” must be placed on a RIMP. This reflects Skinner’s shaping, where behavior is monitored and corrected through “high-dosage tutoring” and “targeted, research-based interventions” until the desired “proficient” response is achieved.
Ohio law now requires districts to establish a certification process for teachers to gain Structured Literacy Certification. The purpose – to ensure every instructor has been “conditioned” in the specific, state-approved evidence-based methods. This aspect of the Ohio’s Science of Reading law brings the Thomas B. Fordham Institute and the National Council of Teacher Quality (NCTQ) to Ohio. Fordham and NCTQ had flagged Ohio’s misalignment of the instructional requirements of the Science of Reading.
There is so much more that could be included in this response to Parent but by now everyone will be aware that Parent’s “symbolic architecture” directly impacts the opportunities children have to learn to read and write.
I am going to pick up here on Ohio’s Teacher Reinforcement through Audits, specifically on the massive statewide audit of university teacher-prep programs that Ohio state conducted. If you want to know how democracies die study this audit.
In late 2022, the Fordham Institute independently commissioned NCTQ to conduct a deep-dive review of teacher preparation programs in Ohio. NCTQ released its findings early at Fordham’s request in the June 2023 Report. The report entitled Teacher Preparation Review Strengthening Elementary School Reading Instruction, includes all the universities and colleges in Ohio that have teacher education programs. Many received an “F.” Ohio State University Graduate Program received a “D.”
Overall, NCTQ, which was established by the Fordham Institute, reported 54% of analyzed Ohio higher education programs were still teaching methods contrary to the Science of Reading. Both Fordham and NCTQ have close ties to the Heritage Foundation and Lindsey Burke who was one of the authors of the Education Section of Project 2025 at the Heritage foundation is now and the Department of Education to dismantle it,
This specific data point gave Governor DeWine and the Ohio General Assembly immense political leverage to pass House Bill 33. It directly justified the state-mandated legal ban on the three-cueing method and the creation of an official state-funded audit team.
ExcelinEd, a Right-Wing education policy organization chaired by former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, actively advised Governor DeWine and his administration on crafting the initiative’s policies. Bush stated that ExcelinEd had “people on the ground” helping DeWine’s staff craft these literacy policies, which mandated the Science of Reading and banned methods like “three-cueing”.
The Meadows Center for Preventing Educational Risk (MCPER) from the University of Texas was awarded a $6.4 million contract to conduct an audit of teacher preparation programs at 50 Ohio public and private institutions of higher education as part of a statewide mandate to base English language arts instruction on the principles of the science of reading.
Gibson Consulting Group & Resources for Learning: Partnered alongside MCPER They deployed on-site reviewers to inspect syllabi, assignments, and class instructions. The metrics were aligned with the International Dyslexia Association’s Knowledge and Practice Standards (KPS).
We pick up the story when the audit was done, and MCPER delivered the “empirical alignment ratings” to DeWine and to the State Assembly. Tom Young, who chairs the Ohio House Higher Education Committee, was charged with the initiative to “change the entire future of what we’re doing in Ohio. We know that.”
On March 10, 2026, Dr. Jennifer B. Schakenberg, the principal investigator who conducted the MCPER audit presented the findings to the House Workforce and Higher Education Committee. At that meeting Representative Tom Young stated, “We’ve had extensive interviews with all the public universities an private universities and got them on the record that they would be committed to adhering to the law and that was important. The decision for non-compliance was debated heavily so we decided if you don’t comply you don’t have an education department anymore. In essence that is the hammer we will use.”
The MCPER 73-point compliance framework requires teacher candidates to demonstrate a deep understanding of explicit, systematic instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. It evaluates whether programs teach the cognitive, linguistic, and neurological foundations of how students learn to read, rather than relying on intuitive or whole-language guesses. The protocol strictly verifies the complete removal of three-cueing and similar methodologies that prompt students to guess words based on pictures, context, or the first letter of a word.
An analysis of the 73 point compliance framework also confirms that children in Ohio are in schools and classrooms in which 19th century teaching techniques are being used to teach them to read. All reading programs with Ohio state approval are now digital, but there is no reference to the fact that children in public schools in Ohio will be taught to read on programs that are digitized and use AI technology. The only point that mentions technology is Topic #58 in Domain 7 on “Writing,” which states, “Increase awareness of assistive technology options and considerations for when and how to use them,” and references the international standards for teaching children with Dyslexia.
There is no evidence anywhere in the 73-point MCPER of active engagement of children, indeed the word “children” only appears once in the entire document, and “child” does not appear at all. Instruction is described multiple times as explicit, systematic, and teacher directed. The indisputable fact that more than 60% of children in the U.S. have had Adverse Childhood Experiences is not recognized by the Ohio State legislature and the 73 point MCPER ignores them.
The 73 point compliance framework neglects the important ties between oral and written language – children having the opportunity to talk is a critical factor in learning to read. It is not only teachers that must be compliant, it is also children who must be compliant, passive, and suppress any desires they might have for active engagement. They are flattened, as Patrick was, for those readers who have read Learning Denied know, Patrick was considered Dyslexic in school while reading chapter books and writing stories at my kitchen table. Science of Reading Audit Metrics have been determined to perform the eventual audits for Ohio’s teacher preparation programs that will begin in early 2025. The metrics are aligned with the standards and qualifications for educator licenses adopted by the State Board of Education under section 3319.22 of the Revised Code and the requirements of the Ohio teacher residency program established under section 3319.223 of the Revised Code. The metrics also align with the International Dyslexia Association’s Knowledge and Practice Standards (KPS) for Teachers of Reading (2018) and the Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE) 12-Hour Reading and Literacy Core Standards (2023).
Part 1: Course Alignment Review
I regard the Science of Reading Audit Metrics as a data set that can be analyzed from multiple perspectives. In this paper I have established that digital transformations from paper to computer-adaptive reading programs (AI) reduce the necessary human interaction needed for children who have experienced trauma to recover and learn creating a public health emergency.
The reading programs on Ohio’s list all digitized. This includes reading programs from both McGraw-Hill and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) are included on Ohio’s state-approved literacy lists. Both McGraw-Hill and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) now identify as technology companies. There are disparities in the data on the amount of time children in Ohio spend on computerized phonemic awareness and phonics exercises but the data on dyslexia is solid – 59 of the 73 points on the Ohio audit metrics comply with the 2018 International Dyslexia Association’s Knowledge and Practice Standards (KPS) for Teachers of Reading (ADS). Under Ohio’s Dyslexia Support Laws, dyslexia screening is a mandatory, systematic process separate from standard curriculum assessments. Every public and charter school district in Ohio must screen all students in Kindergarten through Grade 3 annually using an approved universal screener.
Ohio law dictates that screeners cannot just measure general reading; they must look for the foundational neurological markers of dyslexia. The approved tools check for:
o Phonemic Awareness: Can the child isolate, blend, and manipulate individual sounds orally? (Reinforced offline in Amplify/McGraw-Hill).
o Phonemic Decoding: Can the child read nonsense words (e.g., “vob”, “rut”) to prove they are blending letters rather than memorizing shapes? (Tracked digitally in Lexia).
o Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN): How quickly can the child name a sequence of random letters, numbers, or colors? This measures cognitive processing speed.
The ten year Google + Harvard Connectomics Project which represents a massive leap forward in neuroscience renders the current thinking of neuroscientists about the foundational neurological markers of dyslexia obsolete. The bottom line is that the massive international dyslexia industry if built on faulty science. The Harvard + Google Connectomics Project, which we will focus on in a few paragraphs is explored in depth in the Addendum to this paper, leaves no doubt that human neural architecture is vastly more complex, dense, and non-linear than our current artificial structures.
To be clear, it is scientifically impossible for Ohio’s “screeners” to identify children who are “Dyslexic” based on this law enforced protocol. If the curriculum focuses on rigid, mechanistic decoding and decontextualized instruction protocols that have zero cultural, emotional, or personal relevance to the child, the student is highly likely to not engage. This thread will be expanded later in the text.
For a child who has had ACEs and is still be experiencing toxic stress, learning must feel safe, predictable, and relational. If they cannot find themselves, their community, or any meaning in what they are reading, the task becomes a high-pressure stressor that reinforces feelings of academic failure.
To prevent literacy instruction from re-traumatizing or alienating these students, schools must bridge the gap between cognitive phonics and emotional safety. This involves specific, trauma-informed literacy practices which are absent in U.S. public schools and are not recognized in Science of Reading state laws.
It will become evident when we focus on the breakthroughs in brain research at Harvard University and other research institutions that the false findings of the National Reading Panel, that can be traced back through Engelmann and Skinner, are based on a series of false premises originally made by Thorndike about both science and society.
Chomsky was right about neuroscience being the equivalent of physics at the beginning of the 20th century. We will pick up this thread soon.
Patrick, in Learning Denied, failed these tasks but he was not dyslexic. The children I have worked with who had Adverse Childhood Experiences would have had difficulty with these phonological tasks, but, once again, they were not Dyslexic. In Ohio 33% of Ohio young children (ages 0–6) have a caregiver report that they have already experienced 1 to 3 distinct ACEs. The 33% metric is just a starting metric for young children’s traumatic experiences representing reported cases. The actual number is likely to be much higher with 66% of adults reporting ACEs.
The overall finding of this analysis using Ohio state data is that children in Ohio have a higher rate of ACEs than the national average and higher rates of anxiety and depression. Ohio does offer teachers a “Trauma-Informed Care Certificate,” but there is no provision in the Science of Reading Audit Metrics that supports reading and writing development for the high number of children in the Ohio public school system who have experienced life-impacting traumas. The reverse is the case. The Ohio state enforced reading mandates have the potential to intensify the impact of the traumas.
On March 17, 2026, a meeting of the Workforce and Higher Education Committee took place that focused on the MCPER higher education literacy instruction audits evaluating how Ohio’s colleges of education were training teachers in the “Science of Reading.” (A link to the video hearings is included in the references.)
The on-site surveillance at Ohio’s universities and colleges of faculty, students, and programs, and the questioning of deans and provosts who behave uncomfortably subservient to members of the Workforce and Higher Education Committee is a reminder of the Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti‘s domestic surveillances eradicating domestic dissent. The transcript picks up after the testimony of Dr. Erik Porfeli, Interim Dean of the College of Education, at Ohio State University.
1:10:29 Chairman Young: … Thank you very much Doctor, you had indicated that you had achieved the 73 out of 73, in alignment, but there were 17 issues that they addressed, and you said there were only eight. And I do have a list of, of many of them, and just, just to let you know, we, you know and understand what hangs in the balance. Correct?
Dr. Erik Porfeli: Yes.
Chairman Young: And, and the, the, I want to come away from this committee meeting here because there was another, interim dean, when we brought everyone forward last year, to outline what we were going to do, and the audit was going to take place. And now we have another interim dean. And, so my concern is, how seriously Ohio State is taking this process.
And by the way, I look at it, you’re not taking it very seriously at all. And I want to address a few questions, but there are many lengthy ones. And I would like to, I will have them submitted to you, and I would like to have a written response because like I said, things hang in the balance here, and I’m very serious about this, and I’m not going to play games with it.
So, the first one that I’d like you to answer, is they gave you mandatory recommendations – revise course content to ensure alignment with the evidence based literacy instruction. – that’s the number one prep issue with our, with this legislation. Would you like to comment on that?
Dr. Porfeli: Ohio State University is taking this seriously….faculty, staff, administrators, provost’s office, president’s office, board of trustees, are all in alignment with the commitment to be in alignment with the state standards….clearly, we had missed several items.
I appreciate you citing that at 17…and when we were informed by the auditors that, in fact, those were the issues, we mobilized quickly and addressed all 17…within two weeks our provost, our president, attested to being in full alignment with the standards, both in terms of the science of reading standards, as well as removing content that was not in alignment with the state standards. ….
Dr Binaya Subedi, interim Dean of Dept of Teaching & Learning: We are very serious obviously, and when the auditors visited us, we went one by one item that were addressed, that were talked about in the audit report, the books, the PowerPoints, so we are very committed to this. I know our provost is as well. And we’ve had professional development every week, this semester with faculty and, we are really organized to develop curriculum so that it fully aligns with the science of reading based in Ohio.
Chairman Young: So, I have another, another one that I want to read. And this is another critical part when we have the other universities come forward and show their true commitment with just a slight mistake or slight error, this is one that bothers me. Develop and implement an ongoing, fast, ongoing professional development plan for leadership and faculty, including professors, lecturers, graduate teaching associates, to deepen understanding of evidence based literacy practices, address miscount misconceptions, and ensure accurate implementation of the Ohio Revised Code across the Columbus campus and regional campuses. And you just said that you were starting to implement that process. So here we find materials and evidence based learning, and here we look at it from the standpoint of the entire faculty, and every single person that touches a student on campus, the main campus, and the branch campuses. If you were sitting in my chair, you would be concerned. Are you , are you not concerned?
Porfeli & Subedi: … starting last semester, after the audit report, we have professional development based on all faculty who are in the literacy, systematically reorganized our curriculum … based on all faculty who are in the literacy, and reading is also based on courses. It’s also based on individual professional development. So we have a comprehensive plan moving forward, we’re going to have a curriculum approval sometime in summer, so that all courses are properly vetted, they’re assessed so that we don’t have, one book chapter that may address three cueing, or our PowerPoint that may address some of the issues that are prohibited in Ohio … confident that program will be very strong…we are very committed to the bioscience of reading.
Porfeli: So, and Chairman Young, let me also add a point of emphasis, which is we are committed to adapting our curriculum, our professional development, and our engagement in K-12 education, to be fully in alignment with the science of reading….but clearly, clearly, this audit process was a catalyst, an important catalyst for us to envision that future and start acting on it.
Chairman Young: I appreciate that, and I know that the Chancellor has done an excellent job, and his staff and they’ll follow through with these questions because, this committee will be watching this. Look, this is very important for our state. We have committed hundreds of millions of dollars to this process. It is critical. And when we saw the experts come forward to show the evidence based methods that do work, and that we continue to see illiterate children in our schools, it just makes me sick. We’re asking you to lead. We’re asking everyone in this process to lead. That’s what we have to do. Committing to it’s okay, but there has to be action, and you have to lead. And that’s why I want to leave you with today. And I really appreciate you coming… End of Transcript
The statement that stood out to me when I watched the video of the March 17 Hearing is “We are very committed to the bioscience of reading,”. It supports the conclusion of the data analysis that Ohio state Science of Reading state law treat all the children as if they are Dyslexic. While the Science of Reading state laws ignore 33% of children in Ohio public schools have had multiple Adverse Childhood Experiences.
The other standout from viewing the video is the high level of intimidation experienced by the deans and professors at the universities and colleges that testified. They appeared to exhibit verbal and behavioral stress reactions to the imbalance of power and Tom Young responded to their obsequiousness by threatening them
“So, my concern is, how seriously Ohio State is taking this process,” Tom Young tells Porfeli“And by the way, I look at it, you’re not taking it very seriously at all. And I’m very serious about this, and I’m not going to play games with it.”

Parent Confirms the Names of the researchers who are the architects of the Science of Reading, repeating their names once as “Parent” and once as “Apparent” but hides his or her own name, not owning the critique of excerpts of my May 4, 2026, Substack paper or the lengthy harangue with Diane Ravitch. The work of Jeanne Chall, Marilyn Jager Adams, Linnea Ehri, Keith Stanovich, Louisa Moats, Sally Shaywitz, Hollis Scarborough, Mark Seidenberg, Tim Shanahan, and many others spans decades, disciplines, methodologies, and political contexts. The field is much larger and more internally diverse than the essay suggests.

In the 1990s Lyon served as the Chief of the Child Development and Behavior Branch at the NICHD. Of importance, Lyon enforced a medical/epidemiological model of research requiring replication, control groups, and peer review across the NICHD 44-site reading disabilities research network he established. Lyon included a preponderance of studies that focused on genetics, specifically, the biological bases of written language processing, explaining the development of reading disorders. This is confirmed in his Congressional testimonies, formal progress reports, and independent syntheses.
The specific experimental criteria originating in medical research that Lyon enforced across the 44-site NICHD Reading Research Network, that he later embedded directly into the statutory language of No Child Left Behind (NCLB). The NRP is the most cited research in reading and is second in education only to NAEP. It is ubiquitous. The National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ), ExcelinEd, and The Reading League are among the opportunistic organizations that actively advised and provided guidance to the Ohio state assembly regarding the state’s landmark science of reading legislation. They all advised the use of frameworks derived from the National Reading Panel. NCTQ and ExcelinEd are demonstrably Right-wing. The Reading League is less obviously on the Right, but nevertheless it promotes the same agenda as it’s counterparts on the Right. In Ohio and in the majority of more than 40 other states the Science of Reading is reduced to the findings of the National Reading Panel and to the Dyslexia studies orchestrated by Lyon and funded by NICHD in the 1990s.

At the International Reading Association (IRA) Annual Convention on May 7, 1990, in Atlanta, Georgia ,Chall and Goodman were on a panel, and I was with them after the event.
“Why did you say I don’t do research?” Goodman asked Chall.
“You don’t,” Chall said.
“What would you call my research using miscue analysis?” Goodman asked.
“Clinical trials,” Chall responded. “I keep telling you we could conduct an experiment.”
Goodman walked away.
In the interview Chall spoke of her disappointment in Goodman because when he was a young man, she had high hopes for him. She spoke of inviting him to conduct an experiment with her for many years but he always declined her invitation.
For Chall, the “experimental method” was synonymous with “science.” Seigfreid Engelmann frequently utilized Chall’s foundational research on phonics and reading development to justify and validate the explicit mechanics of his curriculum. And Chall reviewed and evaluated Engelmann’s reading programs, though most of her major academic analysis focused on its original foundational version, DISTAR, which was later revised and rebranded as Reading Mastery.
Chall was convinced that learning to read is not an innate language process, and she explicitly defended the idea that the first step of learning to read is a mechanical process of symbol recognition. Shifting now to Moats’ Ohio Government connection. When Ohio passed House Bill 33 July 2023, it required by law Science of Reading training for thousands of educators. The state then explicitly selected and paid for Lexia LETRS as an approved professional development pathway. Moats’ intellectual property was transformed by Ohio law into a state-funded monopoly, resulting in millions of Ohio tax dollars flowing directly to the corporate entity licensing her work.
I Stand By the Information Presented In the Substack Research Paper and Will Now Take the Analysis Further
Stepping back and remembering that this paper was written in response to a critique of excerpts from my Substack research paper that Diane Ravitch posted on May 8, 2026, on her blog. I stand by the information presented on the Substack research paper How the Science of Reading is just Behaviorism in a Digital Wrapper Funded by Powerful Networks of Political and Commercial Interests. Now, it’s time to take the analysis further.
The landmark Google – Harvard connectomics project reminds us that Chomsky told us that neuroscience is where physics was at the beginning of the twentieth century.
On May 24, 2024, Alexander Shapson-Coe and 30 other scientists at Harvard and Google, published a paper in Science entitled, “A petavoxel fragment of human cerebral cortex reconstructed at nanoscale resolution.” The preprint has been downloaded over 30,000 times and has been cited in over 200 papers. The interactive viewer of the dataset has been accessed over 100,000 times.
Briefly, and for our purposes, I am going to quote James Marinero’s short article published in Medium, March 31, 2026. Marinero says the Google – Harvard paper takes a few hours to read. The is an optimistic estimate. It will take much longer to read and a lifetime to understand it, but it is of critical importance that we make the effort because it is of direct relevance to how children are taught to read.
“To understand the magnitude of this project, one must appreciate that this ‘speck’ of human matter is merely one-millionth of the total volume of a human brain,” Marinero writes. Then he states, “Once the digital reconstruction was complete, the researchers discovered that the biological reality of the brain differs significantly from the descriptions found in standard medical textbooks.”
Marinero writes that, “some of the axions were found to have coiled themselves into tight mysterious whorls.” And that the scientists “identified ‘super-synapses’ or neurons with an extraordinary number of connection points.” He writes that “while a typical neuron might connect to a handful of others, researchers found a single neuron with over 5,000 connection points.”

Given that Google and Harvard researchers state that the biological reality of the brain differs significantly from descriptions found in standard medical textbooks, it stands to reason that the theoretical models in the reading field must also be inaccurate.
All Models of the Brain and Reading are Wrong
It would be a mistake to disregard the disruptive nature of Google + Harvard Connectomics Project. Connectomics is an emerging field of neuroscience focused on comprehensively mapping, analyzing, and understanding the complex network of neural connections within the brain and nervous system. The speck of brain tissue that Google + Harvard took ten years to analyze and map had the physical size of a grain of sand, a sesame seed, or half a grain of rice, and is roughly one-millionth the size of an entire human brain.
When Dr. Jeff Lichtman states that the biological reality of the brain differs significantly from standard medical textbooks, he is challenging the fundamental assumptions of how neural networks—including reading models—are structured.
The classical reading models of Dehaene, Shaywitz, and Seidenberg rely heavily on computational and architectural assumptions that the Harvard-Google Connectomics Project has just turned upside down.
The Google-Harvard brain research fundamentally impacts and disrupts the theoretical models in the reading field.
The Reading Field Model: Models like the Seidenberg’s Eternal Triangle or the Shaywitz three-pathway system rely on distinct functional “nodes” (Visual Word Form Area, Phonological Loop, etc.) sending signals to one another via discrete, linear pathways. They treat the brain like an electrical circuit board.
The Google + Harvard Reality: The connectome revealed that the temporal cortex is dense with “axon whorls”—massive, tangled knots of wiring where thousands of connections wrap around each other unpredictably. This means that processing isn’t just a signal traveling from Point A to Point B; it is a chaotic, non-linear swarm. The theoretical “arrows” connecting spelling, sound, and meaning in reading models are far too simplistic to represent how the brain moves information.
The Google + Harvard Connectomics Project Directly Challenges the Reading Field’s Seidenberg Connectionist Models
In an attempt to deepen understandings of the implications of the Google + Harvard Connectomics Project I had another conversation with AI. The interaction began with my sharing a paragraph from my writing and using the prompt “your thoughts?” Here’s the paragraph.

His work provides a computational foundation that supports Gough’s assertion that low-level word decoding is mandatory for comprehension, while advancing the theory by showing these cognitive processes are deeply interactive rather than isolated.
AI wrote that the statement was accurate, but it became clear we disagreed about the implications of Seidenberg’s model. Here’s AI and my response.
AI: Seidenberg’s model stands up perfectly well because it is an abstract psychological tool used to understand cognitive behavior. The Google-Harvard project is a physical map of cellular anatomy.
